The Producers Guild of Uganda (PGU) is committed to addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing filmmakers in Uganda: the limited access to effective distribution channels. Many films produced locally struggle to reach wider audiences due to inadequate infrastructure, piracy, and a lack of structured platforms for both domestic and international markets. The Distribution Initiative seeks to bridge this gap by creating sustainable systems that ensure Ugandan films are accessible, protected, and profitable.
Through this initiative, PGU aims to strengthen partnerships with cinemas, broadcasters, digital platforms, streaming services, and community film clubs to expand the reach of Ugandan films. The Guild also advocates for the establishment of standardized licensing frameworks, transparent revenue-sharing models, and anti-piracy measures that safeguard the work of producers and ensure they earn fair returns on their investments. In addition, PGU supports the development of local film libraries and archives to preserve Uganda’s cinematic heritage.
At the heart of the initiative is the goal to make Ugandan content more visible and competitive in both regional and global markets. By fostering co-distribution agreements, exploring festival circuits, and leveraging new technologies, PGU envisions a future where Ugandan films are not only celebrated at home but also embraced worldwide. This initiative plays a key role in building a robust value chain that supports producers, empowers audiences, and elevates Uganda’s position in the global film industry
